mezii: “We know we can shut down Donk”

There’s always a fear that when expectations are high, the pressure and bright lights can cause you to falter. Heading into the OVO Wembley Arena on Friday afternoon, expectations were sky-high for Vitality and in particular, UK hero William “mezii” Merriman. Taking on the playoff behemoths of FaZe in the first stage of the weekend, the British-backed bees bounced back after getting blown out on Inferno to set up a clash against Spirit tomorrow. Liam “Slevo” Slevin caught up with the man of the hour following the win to discuss the series, playing in front of the home crowd and their upcoming opponents.

Tell me what your emotions were at the end of that final round, seeing that you had done it and overcome FaZe.

Yeah, I mean, it’s a great feeling, especially after losing the first map and we didn’t really lose it on our terms. It was a bit of a rough game for us, but I think just everyone stepping up in the second two maps and like I say, it wasn’t as close on the third, but it just feels good to play in front of the crowd and having another chance to play in front of it again tomorrow.

What was it like internally trying to reset after that bad loss on Inferno?

Yeah, I mean, I think as a team we’re pretty good at being able to reset quickly. I think having a captain like apEX and XTQZZZ as a coach is like, they’re really passionate and they know what we need to do to win and they’re really clear on the plan and they’re not shying away from these big moments and that’s what we need as players when things are a bit quiet or the energy is a bit low. We have these guys to really pump us up and make sure the next map we’re turning up.

In terms of the crowd, obviously being Friday and the first game is going to be difficult. Was there any sense of disappointment when you saw that it wasn’t as loud as you kind of expected for a home crowd?

No, I mean, I think like you said it’s a Friday afternoon. There’s never always going to be a full sold out, but I think it was still like I say, it’s coming out into this crowd, the entrance and then being in front of everyone when Banks calls your name, even then the noise was really, it was insane. So I think even for the next days, I’m just looking forward to playing there because yeah, you don’t get this chance often and even for a Friday it was still loud. I could still feel the crowd when we were playing and when we were winning rounds. So it’s, that’s the main thing and I’m just excited to do it again.

It’s Spirit next for you guys. Donk, Zywoo, obviously two Goliaths in the scene. What do you think is going to be the key to shutting down Spirit tomorrow?

I mean, we’ve done it once and we can do it again. I think to be honest, we don’t pay too much attention to individuals. We know we can shut down Donk and we also know he’s going to be able to turn up at any point because he’s that type of player who’s insane. So, but like I said before, we have our own star player. We have Zywoo and we have four other individuals as well that can turn up. So we know Spirit likes to play a certain way and that’s the way it is, but we’re confident going up against Spirit because we’ve done it before and why can’t we do it again?
